'Manhunt: the painstaking investigation to catch a child killer'



Forty years ago this month, five-year-old Caroline Hogg was abducted from Portobello, Edinburgh. The massive murder investigation that followed involved six police forces and pioneered the use of computers in criminal investigations. In this excerpt from my new study of Scotland’s serial killers, I give a behind-the-scenes account of the hunt for Robert Black, the killer of three young girls, when I was Detective Inspector on this horrific murder case.
